Comparing it to the older XF56mm f/1.2, the latter doesn’t stand a chance. This is a huge one-up in the AF department. The 56mm f/1.2 was my first lens choice, and it's the best in my small collection (10-24mm f/4, 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8). I ordered the 23mm f/2 but haven't received it yet. I like the relatively small size yet rugged construction. It looks and feels like "precision." I can't seem to take a bad shot with this lens.
Although this may not be what you want if you are looking at a flattering portrait lens, the 50mm is sharper and much more contrasty than the 56mm. Personally, for a portrait, I prefer the fall
