Comparing it to the older XF56mm f/1.2, the latter doesn’t stand a chance. This is a huge one-up in the AF department. The added light gathering from the XF50mm f/1 also makes it even easier to focus on the modern XF bodies. it can easily and securely focus with PDAF down to -7EV on the X-Pro3 and X-T4 cameras.

Gearing up for Photokina, Fujifilm has announced the XF 56mm F1.2 R APD - APD standing for apodization. The lens is a variant of the existing XF56mm F1.2 R, utilizing the same underlying design of 11 elements in 8 groups but it adds an apodization filter. Essentially a radial gradient filter, it aims to produce better-looking highlights and more pleasant bokeh. Read more

The 56mm f/1.2 was my first lens choice, and it's the best in my small collection (10-24mm f/4, 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8). I ordered the 23mm f/2 but haven't received it yet. I like the relatively small size yet rugged construction. It looks and feels like "precision." I can't seem to take a bad shot with this lens.
Although this may not be what you want if you are looking at a flattering portrait lens, the 50mm is sharper and much more contrasty than the 56mm. Personally, for a portrait, I prefer the fall
